DOAA Alumni Retreat Update

A small group of alumni and current members of The Daily Orange staff -
about 20 people - gathered at Newhouse for the first DOAA Retreat on Oct.
15.

The three-hour discussion covered three primary areas - journalism and
writing, the business aspects of the business (job searches, skill sets)
and how the DOAA can best support the paper.

Alumni on hand included:

* Roy Gutterman
* Rob Owen
* Genaro Armas
* Jeanne Albanese
* Josh Barnett
* Jennifer Kronstain
* Neil Sutter

Repairs for both the archives in the attic and 744 Ostrom, itself, top the
list of needs that the DOAA is going to help support.

ARCHIVES
The hardcopy bound archives for papers from the late 80s/early 90s are in
need of repair, as the binders have broken and the papers are starting to
disintegrate. Costs to repair each book will range from $200-$300. More on
how many books require repair and how the DOAA can help soon.

What remains the long-term hope here, as has been discussed in the past, is
raising money for the development of an online archive. (We need to
organize the DOAA a bit further before that can happen correctly.)

744 OSTROM
The University has begun the process of getting estimates for repairs to
the house. There are several windows that need to be replaced, and the
stairs are cracking in some places. The foundation under the back porch is
rotting, as well. The financial impact of this on the paper is as yet
unclear.

What remains the long-term hope here is the newspaper purchasing its own
property.

OTHER UPDATES/TIDBITS
* EIC Jared Novack reports the staff is currently at 30 paid editors.
* Rent on the house is $140/month.
* The editors are experimenting with new formats, running longer versions
of stories online. Also, the team is about to start dabbling in blogs. More
on this soon.
